Myopia

Short-sightedness

Myopia (short-sightedness or near-sighted) occurs when the focal point of light rays entering the eye forms an image in front of the retina, rather than directly on its surface. This results in a blurred or defocussed image falling on the retina. As a result, people who are myopic will typically have difficulty seeing distant objects clearly (e.g. road signs, television), but closer objects (books, mobile phones, etc.) will be in better focus.

Myopia is the most common refractive error, with approximately 23% of the Australian population affected. It is even more common in other Asian countries. Typically, this condition usually develops in childhood or adolescence and stabilises in adulthood.

LaserVision Victoria offers very effective treatment options for correcting myopia including LASIKPRK/TransPRKICL and RLE.
